Thrombus

Thrombus, AKA blood clot, can be classified into red, white, or mixed.^[1][2]

• Red thrombus: erythrocytes and fibrin; responds well to thrombolytics.
• White thrombus: cell debris, fibrin, and platelets; few erythrocytes; resistant to thrombolytics.

These two stroke patients both underwent successful mechanical thrombectomy, but the thrombi retrieved present different characteristics.

(A): A red thrombus retrieved from an elderly patient with atrial fibrillation.
(B): Several white thrombi retrieved from a young patient with a history of cancer.
